As the unofficial winners of E3 last year, Ubisoft had a lot to live up to in order to retain their crown a second year running. Things started off with a light-hearted Rabbid affair, playing on the themes contemporary E3 issues and the iconic popularity of goat simulator, but from here things took a far darker turn.
Far Cry 4
It didn’t take long for us to cordon on that we we’re looking at Far Cry 4, opening with a group of men (and a monkey) on a bus. They’re stopped a checkpoint, when a firefight breaks out. This leaves a number of them dead and you yourself captured.
At this point the main antagonist parades in, calmly explaining his rhetoric before going ape on the soldier that failed him. In the next moment he gives you a hug, before taking a selfie of the two of you.
‘You and I are going to tear shit up’ when Far Cry 4 launches on November 18th.
She’s back, that girl, the one with all the terrible jokes. Report Ubisoft for Troll!
Just Dance 2015
Got a brand new list of tracks, including what looks to be ‘What does the fox say’ though all they confirm is Pharrell Williams and Ellie Goulding.
There’s quite a few strange environments and outfits on stage, though none more so than the idea of other users dancing to you video of the same song.
‘We put you in the game’ this October.
Just Dance Now
Jason Altman is on stage to talk about the unlimited potential of Just Dance Now, a mobile app that works with any tablet, smart TV or PC.
Anyone with a smart phone and able to see the screen can play, your phone works as the controller and we see various people on stage, in the balconies and in the audience dancing along.
‘Bleeding from all your orifices just makes you want to jump up and shake it’ – Aisha Tyler
We get a little more backstory on the Division, you are a member of the civilian elite and 3 weeks after the release of the virus, you’re activated. Your task, to identify the cause of the outbreak.
The trailer on offer had a pretty unique aesthetic, ignoring any characters, but taking note of their effects on the environment, detailing the breakdown of society. When the main character arrives, you can finally see others.
The Division will be released in 2015.
I can hear the sound of an engine rev, probably the crew. It’s an extensive trailer showing various on and off-road driving sections at a fast pace.
Julian Gerighty, the creative director notes that this is one of two 2-hour missions. He also noted that various locations have been engaging in crew battles with the playoffs held on June 10th and 11th.
The Crew is at 4 different booths this E3 – Sony, Microsoft, NVidia and Ubisoft’s own booth, though the latter features two motion seats.
Assassins Creed Unity
We got another look at Unity, with a CG trailer that emphasises the strife within Paris. Once again in this trailer the target is left to the mercy of the mob.
What we got afterwards was a look at some more gameplay footage, where users are tasked with killing Captain Xavier.
We get a look at various side quests as this section plays out, including the overtly familiar catch the thief to a murder mystery side quest. Combat also seems pretty familiar, though the addition of other assassins will certainly mix things up a little.
The streets in Unity are awash with violence, gathering large crowds into one place. My only real concern is that the final kill seemed incredibly scripted, I suspect it won’t play out quite that same way come launch.
Charles Huteau is among the first to decry fitness as boring, thus the team at Ubisoft have come up with something to make it a little more fun.
We got a look at two challenges, the Piano Step in which Charles played against his ‘ghost’ as it were. This felt a little like Dance Dance revolution for those experienced in the genre, the entire thing features stepping on keys in time to the music.
The second challenge was a push up competition, between the USA and France. Lots of random objects appear on the backs of players from arcade cabinets to elephants, at one point they’re asked to hold the press up before kicking it back into high gear.
Valiant Hearts – The Great War
Interesting little indie title, Puzzle adventure set in World War I, following 4 characters throughout.
It’s pretty dark thematically and set for release on June 25th 2014.
Rainbow Six Siege
Yves Guillemot made his first appearance on stage, thanking fans, the teams working on these games before announcing that he had one more thing to show us.
Taken from alpha footage, players are split into two teams, one tasked with securing a hostage, the others with defending her. It’s an interesting premise that plays out a little like Search and Destroy, with the added ability to literally tear through the environment.
